ALBUM REVIEW
‘Hey, Mr Carter, tell me where have you been’
Carter V
When the Carter V was first announced to be dropping back in 2014, Young Money were stilled classed as the juggernauts of the music industry. With their front runner Drake spearheading the label with back to back hit records it seemed like the Canadian protege had become bigger than the once self-proclaimed Best Rapper Alive.
With multiple pushbacks of the release date for the album and Lil Wayne’s growing discrepancy with his former record Label, I believed the album would be stuck in the Cash Money vault forever. ( http://www.cashmoney-records.com/)
Fast forward to September 28th, 2018 the album drops without no extensive over hyped, over promoted promo campaign. I guess waiting four years is the best marketing strategy one can have for an album.
The album begins with a two-minute emotional heartfelt message from lil Wayne’s mother expressing her gratitude to her son for being a great provider. Her tears of pain and joy set’s the mood for one of the stand out songs on the album where XXX Tentacion is revived from the dead to echo the most powerful words ‘Don’t Cry’.
I didn’t know what to expect from this project as Weezy’s last mixtapes were less than great. Tracks like Mona Lisa, Open Safe and Uproar showed that his pen game is still potent as ever and he can keep up with this new generation.
However, I would have preferred a solid 16 tracks rather than a dragged out 23, as some of the songs sounded out dated.
For me this album is more a nostalgic moment than a classic album. A solid effort to wrap up the Carter series.
Overall, I rate this album 3 out 5.
